Devotional 9: “Hearing the Voice of God”
Scripture: John 10:27
“My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.”
Reflection:
There’s something so comforting about this promise from Jesus: “My sheep listen to my voice.” Not might. Not maybe. They do.
But if you’ve ever wrestled with questions like, “How do I know if it’s God or just my thoughts?”—you’re not alone. I’ve asked that too. And through my journey, I’ve learned something freeing: Hearing God’s voice begins with knowing His heart.
We recognize His voice through His Word, first and foremost. The Bible is not just a book—it’s His voice in written form. When we spend time in it regularly, we begin to learn the tone, truth, and character of God. So when He speaks to our heart—through a whisper, a nudge, a prompting—it aligns with what we already know to be true.
He also speaks through His Spirit within us, through circumstances, through godly counsel, and even through our own peace—or lack of it.
But here’s the key: He speaks most clearly to the hearts that are still and surrendered. That means slowing down, getting quiet, and listening—not just talking in prayer, but pausing to receive.
God wants to speak to you more than you want to hear Him. He’s not hiding. He’s inviting. And the more you seek Him, the more you’ll recognize when it’s Him speaking.
Prayer:
Father, I want to hear Your voice clearly. Teach me to recognize the way You speak—through Your Word, through stillness, through Your Spirit within me. Help me not to rush ahead but to listen with a surrendered heart. Let my life be marked by following You closely and confidently. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
